Device Aware Video Optimization

Device Aware Video Optimization

Every mobile device, whether it is a smartphone, feature phone, tablet or a notebook, needs special handling to get optimization right. Mobixell has, over the course of more than a decade, built up a depth of media handling experience, making it the de facto global leader in video optimization. Mobixell can adapt algorithms to quickly add new devices to an already extensive device profile library.

Device-aware optimization assures that optimized content leverages each specific device’s capabilities, and considers its limitations for the best user experience and highest compression. As smartphones and tablets vary in hardware, processing power and screen size, so do their multimedia capabilities and limitations. Delivering video to users requires the operator to offer an average viewing experience to fit the lowest common denominator, or that the content’s quality is explicitly tuned for each device, providing a maximized viewing experience.

With additional video formats (WebM/VP8) and codecs, new ways of playing video (HTML5) and the different delivery methods (HTTP-PD, HLS, Silverlight, etc.), it is clear that video optimization solutions should expand and adapt to support the ever growing variety of devices.

  • Device aware considerations
    • Screen size
    • Format and codec support
    • Specific handset streaming configurations
  • Feature-phones require different handling
    • RTSP/RTP streaming protocols

  • Flash video support for iOS devices – Mobixell Seamless Access identifies and transcodes media that is not native to a page being viewed. This capability is achieved by performing drill down HTML link extraction which enables core network-level optimization tasks, including transcoding of video in Adobe® Flash® format for the Apple® iOS (iPhone®, iPod® and iPad®), and analysis of all content in dynamic, multi-source pages.
