We just concluded a very interesting webinar called “Rich Media Mobile Internet”, where industry experts from Yankee Group, Cisco and Mobixell discussed what I like to call the “Mobile Data Paradox”. The Paradox is this: on one hand we are all exhilarated from the fact that users are “mass consuming”mobile internet and mobile broadband; we have waited for this for ten years: at last, a mass market data service which is not SMS. On the other hand mobile operators are still struggling with the technical issues, cost issues and most importantly the (lack of) revenue issues, and their place in the value chain.
We tried to touch all these issues in the Webinar – Declan Lonergan, VP from Yankee Group, has made very interesting observations about the mobile data strategy positioning of several tier1 operators in Europe; Wolfgang Weber, VP Mobile Practice of Cisco has talked about the ways the operators can monetize the mobile data traffic, and John Sims, former CEO of 724 Solutions (which has merged with Mobixell) and a board member in Mobixell, has highlighted the importance of the rich media and video in the overall mobile data traffic, and the need to ensure user experience while managing and optimizing the mobile broadband and mobile internet traffic. If you have heard the webinar and want to comment about it and continue the discussion, or if you want to share your thoughts about the subject – you are welcome to comment.
